The Notable Nyan Cat

The Nyan Cat is a figment of human imagination and doesn’t exist in real life kind of like all those shovel ready jobs the previous president spoke about that could have been created but never did which is another topic. Rather and moreover, it’s a video that was uploaded on YouTube in April 2011, only to become a meme on the Internet later.

This video used a pop song in Japanese and showed a cartoon cat that had a body resembling a Pop-Tart and which flew through space, leaving the trail of a rainbow behind it.

Creating the Nyan Cat

It doesn’t take much to create the Nyan Cat unlike creating a Transformers movie which involves deep thought and incredible imagination but let’s get back on the right track here. First, you need to draw a rectangle and round off the edges. A similar but smaller rectangle then needs to be drawn inside it. The front part’s middle needs to be erased and a cat’s head now needs to be drawn with a tail on the other end.

The front paws are to be drawn on the bottom right while the rear paws should be placed on the bottom left. The background needs to be painted in the seven colors of the rainbow.

Nyan is a Japanese onomatopoeia for the typical cat sound, “meow”. Most Nyan Cat fans opine that it’s a female because the original Japanese pop song was sung by a lady. At the beginning, however, the GIF and the song weren’t related. The cat’s GIF never mentioned anything specific about the gender. The author too, didn’t specify anything either.

History of the Nyan Cat

In April 2011, the cat’s GIF animation was first posted by Christopher Torres, a resident of Dallas in the fantastic state of Texas which continues to yank jobs from New York and California but this is another subject. He used the name, Prguitarman, on LOL-Comics – his personal website. Torres was inspired to create this fictional character while working on a charitable Red Cross program where he was doing certain drawings for his Livestream video chat.

Some people casually mentioned to him that he should also draw a cat and a Pop Tart. This led to the creation of a hybrid image that combined a cat and a Pop-Tart, which later was developed as an animated GIF. The cat’s design was inspired by Marty, Torres’ own pet cat, which dies in 2012.

The song, “Nyanyanyanyanyanyanya’s!” original version was uploaded by “daniwell,” a user on Niconico, a Japanese site in July 2010 and featured Hatsune Miku, a Vocaloid. In 2011, “Momomomo,” a user uploaded the cover version of “Nyanyanyanyanyanyanya!” This featured Momone Momo, a UTAU voice. This voice source was of a Tokyo resident, Momoko Fujimoto who dubbed for the voice of Momone Momo.

The popular video on YouTube came into existence when saraj00n, a YouTube user combined the animated cat version with Nyanyanyanyanyanyanya’s Momo Momo version and uploaded the same on YouTube in 2011. This was 3 days after Christopher Torres uploaded his own animated version of the Nyan Cat.

The video went on to become a grand success after websites like CollegeHumor and G4 hosted it as well. Torres however, maintained that the original name, Pop Tart Cat would remain and he would continue to stick to it. The name Nyan Cat had been given by the Internet.

The Nyan Cat’s popularity continues to grow, especially among teenagers and college goers who seem to have lots of time for this type of stuff. The bright rainbow background adds to the visual appeal and the site has had over a million strikes. That is certainly more success than the movies Meet the Parents II and III and The Force Awakens was weak too but let’s get back onto the main theme.

The Nyan Cat is impressive and interesting to some people.
