Owning a Dog or Cat Can Add Years to Your Life

Did you know that having a dog or cat can add years to your life?  Researchers have proven that owning a pet helps to control chronic conditions such as stress and high blood pressure.  In some studies, owning a dog or cat is actually equivalent to taking medication for controlling high blood pressure.  Of course, you should not discontinue your medication without prior clearance from your doctor.

A pet encourages you to be social, active (walking) and entertained.  These attributes help you to feel better about yourself and your surroundings.  There are few people who wouldn’t crack a smile or be entertained by the antics of a puppy or kitten.

If you suffer from depression, a pet makes an ideal companion.  The positive interaction you have with a pet releases powerful chemicals (endorphins) in your brain.  These feel good chemicals will help chase away the blues and help you to feel better about yourself.

Don’t think you have enough time to have a pet of your own?  Try volunteering at an animal shelter or humane society.  Not only will this help you feel good, it will also help abandoned animals live a better life.
